Second in a series of three photos taken in Blåvand on the Danish West Coast where numerous WWII German bunkers remain on the beach and in the dunes. These originally formed part of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall against a possible allied invasion. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Denmark, a number of bunkers were converted to “mules” by the artist Bill Woodrow in 1995. It was decided to leave the mules standing with their timeless symbolism: a beast of burden dragging evil away from the beach into the sea, and a bunker transformed into sterile mule, ensuring that the “monument” can never again reproduce.
