Beachgoers are being urged to stay vigilant this summer amid an alarming number of injuries — and even deaths — caused by drivers on the beach. At least 12 states allow you to drive on at least some beaches.
Driving is not permitted on most beaches in Florida. But in Daytona Beach and other communities in Volusia County, it’s a tradition so ingrained that nobody would even talk about banning vehicles on the beach. It was a taboo subject. The thing that brought it up was protecting sea turtles.
Soft sand shifting south will eventually mean cars will no longer be able to drive along the beaches in Volusia County. According to the study, ocean levels are rising every year, which means Mother Nature may eventually decide if cars should remain on the beach regardless of what the sand does. The report also states cities with limited beach driving have higher real estate values.
The National Park Service would be required to minimize buffers on protected areas and build roads and vehicle access points as quickly as possible if the measure becomes law.
