From its beginning Alabama has been endowed with some of the finest natural white sand beach and dune systems in the nation, but, over time, we have preserved less, and destroyed more of this asset than any other state. This has occurred through a “gold rush” of beach development following the 1979 Hurricane Frederick and continuing after Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina.
Any visitor to the western end of Dauphin Island, Orange Beach, Gulf Shores or parts of Fort Morgan will see that a vast share of our original beach and dune habitat has been lost. We have literally “paved paradise and put up a parking lot!..”
