The Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault which marks the boundary between the African (Nubian) and the Eurasian continental plates runs westward from Gibraltar into the Atlantic. It shows a complex and active tectonic behavior, and is responsible for several important earthquakes that hit Portugal. Most famously devastating,the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, also known as the Great Lisbon Earthquake, heavily damaged almost all the coastal towns and villages of the Algarve, except Faro, which was protected by the sandy banks of Ria Formosa.Wikipedia
Excerpts;
Mysterious small tremors in the most earthquake-prone areas on Earth may be the cause of surprisingly large tsunamis, researchers say.
Researchers discovered that the very-low-frequency quakes, ranging from magnitudes of 3.8 to 4.9, can last 30 to 100 seconds, which generate tsunamis far stronger than one would expect for the amount of seismic energy they release.
These findings suggest that authorities should keep a closer eye on the shallow areas of subduction zones…
